I let Trish sleep in and figured I’d try to get the power back on. I knew Joe had a generator, and maybe it needed gas. Joe was great at planning, poor at maintaining, however. Which was how his home address had ended up in my GPS. A slow tire leak had turned into much more when he hadn’t dealt with it quickly enough.

Still, he was one of the good ones, plus we were crashing at his house, so the least I could do was make myself useful.

I threw on my jacket, boots, hat, and mitts, grabbed the shovel, and started making my way toward where I figured the generator would be.

It took a while, but I finally got the thing working after clearing off some snow and refueling it. Of course, that meant I had to trek back to our car to get the emergency gas can, but it all got done in the end.

When I stepped inside, the smell of fresh coffee and bacon greeted me. It seemed Trish had made good use of the power already.

“I figured Joe wouldn’t mind if we helped ourselves to food since we’re stuck here, anyway. We’ll replace everything.”

I threw off my coat and kissed Trish deeply. The cabin held the warmth of the fire well, and she only wore one of my t-shirts, and was hot as hell.

“Merry Christmas,” she said with a sly smile, and pulled me back to bed. The bacon was cold by the time we got to it, but still delicious.

Well, this was turning into a perfect Christmas, after all.

“I’m just going to go have another look around the house to see what else I can fix,” I eventually said, disentangling myself from her.

“What, now?”

“Sure, I mean, we’re not doing anything, right?”

She looked at me for a few moments before saying, “I guess not,” and turning back to the fire.

I knew enough to know I’d screwed up, but not enough to know what exactly I’d done.

“Want more coffee?” I asked, in a bid to win her back.

She shook her head, and I shrugged, threw on my boots, and headed back out. I could probably chop some wood.

The fire kept the cabin warm, but despite that, it felt entirely more frigid in there than it did outside.
